We are ready to “leek” the news! Brighter Bites has been selected as one of four local charities to compete for proceeds at the OKRA Charity Saloon (located at 924 Congress Street in Houston) during the entire month of August!

The proceeds at OKRA have been averaging about $16,000 every month, and all of the funds go to the winning charity — now that’s a lot of cabbage! In order to win, Brighter Bites needs to garner the most votes this month. For each drink or food item purchased, you’ll receive one ticket to vote for one of the four charities selected by OKRA’s members. The charity with the most votes at the end of August receives the proceeds from September. Easy peas-y!

So if you live in Houston, or are coming to visit from out of town, grab some friends and stop on by OKRA for a drink! Just be sure to visit the voting booth to place your tickets in our box!…Don’t worry, you can’t miss it! Our design is bright and anything but mediOKRA!  Look for the booth with the Brighter Bites red, recipes cards, and photo booth props! Let us know you voted by posting a picture on social media with our hashtag #brighterbites!

Brighter Bites is a Houston-based nonprofit founded in 2012 by two Houston women, Lisa Helfman and Shreela Sharma. The mission of Brighter Bites is to create communities of health through fresh food using our formula: produce distribution + nutrition education + fun food experience. We have distributed nearly 14 million pounds of produce and hundreds of thousands of nutrition education materials to more than 30,000 families in Houston, Dallas, and Austin, TX.

Three Cheers for Houston Volunteers!

It’s Time to Celery-brate

This year Brighter Bites was thrilled to provide programming to 50 schools in the Houston area. More schools mean more food to pack and distribute. Thousands of pounds of food may seem daunting to some, but we’ve learned after nearly five years that, when it comes to the Houston community, incredible volunteers are in no short supply.

On May 11th, the Brighter Bites Houston team expressed their thanks with an appreciation party honoring the valuable time and effort donated daily by the volunteers who make the Brighter Bites mission possible.

Approximately 300 party guests were welcomed at the Houston Food Bank with a SNAP cookbook and a beautiful slideshow of photos capturing their hard work at each of the sites. Volunteers proudly cheered as photos of their school flashed onto the screen.

In true Brighter Bites fashion the party included delicious treats for volunteers to snack on. Everyone wanted a turn on the smoothie bike where they could peddle out a creamy creation. Moments were captured in a fun and festive photo booth, and some party goers even got to walk away with amazing raffle prizes. It was a true celery-bration!

The party gave volunteers from all over Houston a chance to gather in one place and celebrate their achievements! Several shared touching stories about how Brighter Bites has impacted their lives and changed their eating habits profoundly. These personal moments were a true highlight.

The staff of Brighter Bites has the incredible opportunity to work alongside families in their own communities to inspire healthy eating and healthful choices. We are well aware that the program is only made possible by the help of the families and community members who continue to share their time, support, and strength with us. A huge thank you to all Brighter Bites volunteers!

We look forward to working with you for many years to come!

MD Anderson Cancer and Brighter Bites have teamed up on a study called Project Church/Project FRESH to provide healthy options in a Southwest Houston food desert with a goal of preventing cancer. KHOU, the CBS affiliate station in Houston, profiled that partnership and illustrated its impact in last night’s evening news with great soundbites from some of our participants, our Co-Founder Dr. Shreela Sharma, and her co-investigator Dr. Lorna McNeil at MD Anderson.

Shipt to Join Brighter Bites in New Partnership

shipt_logo

Today we’re delighted to announce a new program partnership with Shipt, the on-demand grocery delivery service. Shipt will sponsor Brighter Bites programming in 2017 at one school in each of our three cities: Austin, Houston, and Dallas.

“We’re committed to long-term support of the Brighter Bites mission,” says Liz Willis Cook, Community Partnership Specialist at Shipt, “and plan to provide volunteer time and in-kind support in addition to a monetary commitment throughout our partnership.”

Shipt’s initial contribution came through their significant donation to Brighter Bites in support of our fundraising effort for the Austin Marathon. With Shipt’s help, Brighter Bites will benefit from a Moody Foundation donation which made a grant that will match all donations raised by the 27 official Austin Gives Miles charities, up to $10,000 per charity.

We’re looking forward to spending Marathon weekend with the folks from Shipt. First, we’ll share a booth at the Race Expo on Friday, February 17 & Saturday, February 18 at the Austin Convention Center. That’s where the race’s 14,000+ runners pick up their race packets, try new running gear, and sample energy snacks. Brighter Bites and Shipt will be handing out crisp red apples and swag to anyone who comes to our booth! Shipt will also join us at the Brighter Bites Aid Station located at Mile 8 on the Marathon course, also known as The Rock at Town Lake, where our volunteers will be cheering on thousands of runners and hydrating them as they pass.

We are over the moon about our new partnership with Shipt! And don’t you just love their logo?

Sharma Family Establishes Game-changing Endowment in Community Nutrition and Health

sharmas-vibhu-shreela

Brighter Bites is thrilled to announce that our co-founder Shreela Sharma and her husband have set up an endowment that will strengthen the link between the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living and Brighter Bites, and, most importantly, establish a pipeline of brain power that will develop the next generation of Brighter Bites scientists!

This story from the UTHealth website describes the endowment and the new Sharma Fellows who will benefit it. We have also pasted the story below:

Paying it forward is something that many people aspire to every day. Faculty member and alumna, Shreela Sharma, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., along with her husband, Vibhu Sharma, have committed $100,000 to establish the Shreela and Vibhu Sharma Endowed Fund for Excellence in Community Nutrition, Health & Wellness at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health. The donation will be matched one-to-one by the Game Changers Fund offered by UTHealth.

Shreela Sharma is an associate professor in the UTHealth School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences and works with the school’s Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living.

“We are grateful to have the support of the Sharmas through this new fellowship,” says Eric Boerwinkle, Ph.D., dean of the School of Public Health. “This support of student academics and research demonstrates the outstanding dedication our faculty members have to the school. Dr. Sharma is already a super star on our faculty, and I look forward to great things from her in the future. Shreela and Vibhu’s gift is a testament to the generosity of the people of Houston to UTHealth and the School of Public Health, in particular.”

The endowment will fund several doctoral-level student fellowships every year. The doctoral fellowships funded by the endowment will be competitive and require a research commitment of at least two semesters (200 hours per semester) from doctoral students selected to be “Sharma Fellows.”

“I went to UTHealth and I had some fantastic experiences and mentors that really made public health important and relevant for me – the whole experience,” says Shreela Sharma about her time as a student at UTHealth School of Public Health where she earned a Ph.D. in 2005. “We always knew that we wanted to give back in any small way possible.”

Sharma, who is known for her work in community nutrition and childhood obesity prevention, says she hopes the fellowship will help the school continue to attract talent at a high level. “We have some fantastic work and research that we’re doing through Brighter Bites, for example. These opportunities would really help students get that ‘public-health-in-action’ experience.”

Shreela Sharma is co-founder of Brighter Bites, alongside Lisa Helfman. This non-profit organization aims to improve eating behavior among predominantly low-income families by introducing them to a routine distribution of fresh produce, along with corresponding education in school and at home, ultimately helping to curb the childhood obesity epidemic in Houston. “Sharma Fellows will be a tremendous asset to the research questions that Brighter Bites is interested in answering” says Lisa Helfman. Sharma’s work at the School of Public Health focuses on Brighter Bites and other community-based nutrition research.

Vibhu Sharma emphasized the economic value that the endowment offers fellows in addition to the experience. Sharma Fellows would not only get compensation for being selected as a fellow, but would also get access to in-state tuition rates. He said he is also interested in the legacy it will leave for his own family. “This would be something in-perpetuity, so it would allow us to have a legacy for the Sharma name,” he says.

He is also excited about continuing to raise awareness in nutrition and public health through this Endowment. “The idea is to highlight what the endowment is going to support, which is research in nutrition and health through programs like Brighter Bites. The outreach and awareness that we would generate from this would hopefully get more people on the healthy bandwagon.” He adds in with a bit of humor, “For people like me, for whom it is easy to jump into a box of Cheetos.”

The endowed fund’s principal investigator is Deanna Hoelscher, Ph.D., R.D., director of the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living on the School of Public Health’s campus in Austin (one of six campuses across the State of Texas). Hoelscher’s role in the endowment will be to make sure funds are dispersed as soon as they are ready; see that student work is supervised by a faculty member; and promote the fellowship whenever possible.

Hoelscher echoes the Sharmas’ sentiments for attracting top students to the School of Public Health. “Whenever you get funding like this – especially when it’s for a student who is out of state or out of country – that in-state tuition really amplifies the amount of money you get through the fellowship itself.”

This endowment will strengthen the relationship between academia and the non-profit sector. The goal is to improve the nutrition status and health of parents, children and the greater community.

Brighter Bites Wraps up Best Year Yet!

The year 2016 was big in every way for Brighter Bites. We worked with more families and more sites this year than ever before. We developed more recipes, hired more staff, and collaborated with more partners.

But here’s the big news! In 2016, Brighter Bites provided more produce to more families in one year than ever before! In fact, we distributed more than 5,000,000 pounds of produce to almost 20,000 families across more than 100 sites in Houston, Dallas, and Austin in 2016 alone!

bb5

That’s just one piece of news! Brighter Bites distributed more nutrition education materials in 2016 than in years past too — we passed out over 600,000 pieces of nutrition education material to our families this year!

bb6

And, Brighter Bites has given out more recipe samples this year than ever before too! Thousands of families have tasted more than 135,000 produce-based, kid-friendly, recipe samples developed and prepared by the Brighter Bites staff in 2016.

Brighter Bites would not be where we are today without the ongoing support of our partners and collaborators. Next year is going to be bigger and better! We can’t wait for 2017!

Brighter Bites Research Published Again!

KR1

Last week another research article about Brighter Bites was published – this time by the Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice. The article, Brighter Sights: Using Photovoice for a Process Evaluation of a Food Co-op Style Nutrition Intervention was based upon a study that focused on the Brighter Bites Photovoice initiative, a community research project that explores how communities are reacting to the Brighter Bites program. Photovoice allowed the researchers to see the impact that Brighter Bites has on families at Lantrip Elementary in Houston, a predominately Hispanic, economically-disadvantaged, urban school, through documentary photography.

The parents who participated in this project first developed research questions (1) How are children responding to Brighter Bites? (2) How has Brighter Bites impacted my family’s lifestyle?; then took photos; and, finally reflected on and analyzed the resulting pictures, all as a team.

BR2

The photos, two of which are shown here, were included in an exhibit last year to demonstrate the impact of Brighter Bites from the perspective of participating families and to start a conversation about the change that Brighter Bites is making. The exhibit offered an invaluable glimpse of the family experience so that Brighter Bites may continue to improve, expand, and align with community values while bringing fresh fruit and vegetables to families across Texas.
