Dallas Program Director Interviewed on Radio Show

Alicia Farhat, Program Director for Brighter Bites in Dallas, was interviewed on a Sunday Morning Magazine public affairs show broadcast in Dallas on July 24, 2016. The program aired on six Dallas/Fort Worth radio stations at 6:00am on the majority of stations and at 8:00am and 10:30am on Talk Radio 1190am KFXR. Alicia’s segment was on the last 10 minutes of the program and since the program aired on various stations the listenership for the stations is around 20-30,000 on each station at that time on Sunday mornings.

The interview is terrific, highlighting all three of our pillars as well as our website and calling specific attention to our recipes, tip sheets, and research. Alicia was spectacular and gave all the highlights of the Dallas program, as well as the history of Brighter Bites.

If you have 10 minutes or so, take a listen!

The Dallas Morning News ran a great story about Brighter Bites in the paper’s Business section, today (7/22/16). The piece, Program Doles out Healthful Food by Staff Writer Holly Haber, specifically focuses on Jack Lowe Elementary School in the Vickery Meadow section of the city. The story beautifully captured our program’s mission with several photos of produce-filled bags and quotes from interviews with participating families, volunteers, and Alicia Farhat, the Brighter Bites Program Director in Dallas.

This is the third summer of Brighter Bites programming in Dallas! From serving 150 families at three Project Transformation sites in the summer of 2014 to serving approximately 1600 families at 15 sites this summer, we have come a long way. With this growth we have been able to welcome new partnerships with City of Dallas Recreation Centers, YMCA and Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas, and other community centers. The Brighter Bites Dallas team has been working with staff and volunteers at each site every week to bring healthful food choices and nutrition education to participating families.

Thanks to our food bank partner in Dallas the North Texas Food Bank, Brighter Bites has been able to share a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables with families. A total of 295,000 pounds so far this summer and counting! A few of the family’s favorites have been blueberries, mangoes, melons, squash varieties, and radishes. Parent volunteers and their children continue to stop by our sites to lend a hand in the bagging and distribution of all these pounds of produce. Volunteers from several organizations in Dallas, among them the National Charity League – Addison Chapter, have also joined us in this endeavor and they have done a stellar job. Last Spring we clocked in a total of 2,590 volunteer hours, so we’ll see how many more our volunteers will do this summer!

We have also paired some tasty recipes for taste-testing with the produce families are taking home, and so far the Broccoli and Grape Salad is taking the lead as the most enjoyed by the kids, followed closely by the Mango Tango Salsa! In addition to the fresh produce and fun food samples, our Program Coordinators have also been teaching CATCH lessons in the classroom around the clock at Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas Brighter Bites locations and Voice of Hope Ministries. Coordinators have thoroughly enjoyed doing hands on activities with the kids and teaching them some useful tools to lead healthier lifestyles. Other sites like Trinity River Mission and Wesley-Rankin Community Center are doing a superb job at fully implementing CATCH themselves with materials and guidance provided by Brighter Bites.

This has been a successful summer so far, and we have to thank our partners, volunteers, and staff at sites for continuing to support Brighter Bites’ mission to create communities of health through fresh food!

Dallas Program Coordinator Named Texas CATCH Champion

CATCH Dallas
Dallas Program Coordinator, Jacqueline Noyola (pictured above, second from right), will be one of six CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) Champions recognized this year in Texas by the CATCH Global Foundation for her relentless passion for advocating for children’s health and supporting healthy environments at the schools Brighter Bites serves in Dallas.

Over the course of her nearly two years with Brighter Bites, Jacqueline has become as a leader in the implementation of CATCH. Her mission is to encourage and empower faculty and staff in each Brighter Bites school to use the CATCH curriculum and get excited about teaching and modeling healthy habits for children and their families.

Jacqueline has excelled in her efforts to fulfill Brighter Bites’ goals through not only increasing access to fresh produce, but also educating children, families, and staff at schools on how to lead and promote healthier lifestyles. The Brighter Bites family is thrilled to have a CATCH Champion working with teachers and staff on coordinated school health!

Brighter Bites Spring in Dallas

For Brighter Bites in Dallas, spring programming has come to a close. We are grateful for all the support we receive from the Dallas community and, especially the North Texas Food Bank, our generous local partner.

Dallas Completes Fall Season in Brighter Bites Style

Dallas has wrapped up a fantastic fall this year with 665,000 pounds of produce delivered to 2500 families. To mark the occasion, some parent volunteers celebrated in Brighter Bites style! At Roger Q. Mills Elementary, the volunteers organized a Thanksgiving-inspired get together. Everyone brought a side dish whose main ingredient was a fruit or vegetable. Ana Saldana brought a beautiful and delicious zucchini and corn casserole. Kudos to Ana for embracing Brighter Bites in her everyday cooking — it was a big hit! At Brighter Bites, our volunteers come together each week to work hard, but they also have a chance to develop friendships and create community. For centuries, people have come together around food — planting, harvesting, eating in small groups, and gathering for large celebrations. We are continuing this tradition by creating a community around fresh produce and giving that community the opportunity to make healthier choices. Our volunteers in Dallas made it happen. We hope you will too! Happy holidays!

Fall Break with Brighter Bites

A group of Southern Methodist University (SMU) students volunteered at an east Dallas Brighter Bites elementary school this week as part of the SMU Alternative Fall Break program. Designed to engage students in direct service with an organization, this program focuses on providing participants with an understanding of the complex issue of poverty. Eight SMU students and their faculty advisor worked with parent and community volunteers to move, bag, and distribute 4300 pounds of fresh produce for the 130 Brighter Bites families at the school. The elementary kiddos were thrilled to see the SMU students walking through their halls that day. Brighter Bites always appreciates community members who volunteer, especially hard working college students. Thanks, Mustangs!
