A Shining Star at C.F. Carr

Carr

At C.F. Carr Elementary in Dallas, Brighter Bites is thriving! The principal, Ms. Ruiz, is an absolute delight to work with and is a cheerleader for our program. Her energy is contagious, making the staff and volunteers excited about the program as well. One volunteer who goes above and beyond is Rebeca Cisneros. Although we always provide the necessary tools for a successful distribution, Rebeca actually created her own Brighter Bites apron to use on the day she volunteers! The pockets of the apron are filled with items she may need including gloves, pens and a box cutter for efficiently bagging produce. Rebeca sets a great example for her granddaughters who always offer to help clean up after the volunteers complete their job. Rebeca has also made several delicious recipes with the Brighter Bites produce and gladly shares pictures of her creations. She even brought pickled carrots and onions for us to try one day — she made them using a recipe from one of our parent handbooks. Rebeca said it was easy to prepare and the vegetables tasted great! We love knowing our families are using the tools we provide them to prepare healthy meals at home. Thanks, Rebeca! You are just one stellar example of the awesome volunteers at C.F. Carr who help the program flourish!

Recruiting Fresh Families

Here at Brighter Bites Dallas, we are always looking for opportunities to recruit new families to the program. On January 15th, the day Dallas ISD held parent/teacher conferences, we planted ourselves in the hallways at two of our current sites, Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary and C.F. Carr Elementary. We wanted to meet families who aren’t currently participating in Brighter Bites and remind those who are that produce distribution will start up again soon. We have great participation at these schools but we want to feed with even more impact when we get the chance. We set up shop with all of our usual Brighter Bites supplies, including a basket of crunchy, crispy apples and our nutrition handbooks, and talked with families about the program as they headed off to their meetings. families We are thrilled to announce that we recruited 50 new families for the spring semester at Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary! We also reconnected with several returning families and volunteers who are excited about the program starting again soon. At C.F. Carr Elementary, the kids were happy to see us – the apples were a huge hit and we gladly gave out seconds! The participating families and staff members are looking forward to more fresh produce this semester! We can’t wait to kick off the first spring distribution for Brighter Bites in Dallas. It was wonderful to see some familiar faces around the schools and remind our Brighter Biters that we’ll be back in a couple of weeks. See you soon!

Crafting Careers at C.F. Carr Elementary

We love spreading the word about nutrition! That’s why it was such a huge honor to speak at career day at C.F. Carr Elementary School. We talked to the kiddos about working for Brighter Bites as dietitians before we taught them the sweet specifics about sugar in drinks! CF Carr Career Day KM We enjoyed sharing how rewarding it is to be on the Brighter Bites team! It’s so much fun cooking up scrumptious samples and working with our extraordinary volunteers every week. Talking to the kids about fruits and veggies is especially rewarding too! Maybe even our favorite part! The newfound muscles we have from lifting 50 pound bags of cabbage aren’t bad either. They sure impressed the kids! At the end of the day, we taught a lesson about sugary beverages. After some quick measuring, the kids were shocked to see how much sugar was in some of their favorite drinks! We used this opportunity to talk about making healthier choices with Brighter Bites produce and even shared a smoothie recipe that the kids could make at home! We really enjoyed spending time with the kiddos at C.F. Carr and can’t wait to see them again in the spring! CF Carr Career Day Sugar
